The county fair is one of the social highlights of rural Ohio. This is very much true in Knox County. My family has shown draft ponies at the fair for many years. I always enjoy walking through the arts and craft displays under the grandstands. I chose some of my favorite photos from the last year and enter them into the photography show. Viennese Rain
I was strolling the streets around Stephansplatz looking for a lunch spot when a sudden rain appeared. The afternoon light and light rain gave me the perfect opportunity to capture this image. - September 1, 2017, Vienna, Austria (Color Photography, Landscape: 1st Place), (Best of Show Photography: Honorable mention) -
Barn Dance
A visit to Malabar Farms' Heritage Days is one of the highlights of my autumn traditions. The Central Ohio Draft Horse Association hauls guests from the lower farm to the manor house and upper farm. I was helping our friend Dave on his wagon when I saw the perfect shot of the Malabar Farms barn in front of our team and wagon. September 24, 2017, Malabar Farms, Lucas, Ohio (Color Photography, Barns: 1st Place) -
Morning Glory
The Berger family dairy farm is a frequent subject in my Instagram feed. It's position to the east of our house makes it the perfect subject for a sunrise photo. This particular morning I was fortunate to be there as the sun was breaking over the horizon with some nice cloud cover. It silhouetted the barn and silo making a dramatic shot. October 21, 2017, Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio (Color Photography, Sunrise/Sunset: 1st Place) -
Autumn's Colorful Carpet
Hony Run Waterfall is one of my favorite Knox Parks hikes. The waterfall is quite beautiful and usually the subject of my photos at the park. On this particular day, autumn colors were in their full glory. I caught this shot as I turned from the edge of the waterfall and looked across the ledges. Brett and I were visiting with his longtime school buddy Paul at the Hartford Fair dairy barn. I turned to see this little guy hugging this jersey. It was just perfect and told a great story. This is personally my favorite photo that I entered in the photo competition. August 6, 2017, Hartford Fair, Hartford, Ohio (Color Photography, People: 1st Place) -
Good Morning
The sun was rising over the barn on this foggy morning. Christy and Jill came to visit me while I was capturing the shot. They stole the show and became the subjects for the photo. Out for a Ride
This is Nora, a Jack Russell Terrier, who rode the wagon during Malabar Farms Heritage Days. She owns Amy, a co-worker of Dave's wife, Sam. The simplicity and similarity of the blues made for the perfect setting. It was as if she was posing for her shot. September 24, 2017, Malabar Farms, Lucas, Ohio (Color Photography, Domestic Pets: 1st Place) -
Winter Chores
I was out for a walk around the pony pasture on a cold winter day when I came upon my father-in-law moving a bale of hay to the livestock feeder. It captures life on the farm that must go on regardless of the weather conditions. January 13, 2018, Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio (B&W Photography, Barns: 1st Place) -
On the Run
On a misty morning, the ponies came running up to the fence. I happened to be at the right place at the right time to catch this action shot. September 16, 2017, Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio (B&W Photography, Nature: 1st Place) -
Circles in the Sky
The geometric and repeating patterns formed by a hay rake in a farm implement display at the KnoxCounty Fair caught my eye. Clouds had moved in and added some drama to the shot. It was the perfect subject for a B&W photo. July 25, 2017, Mt. Vernon, Ohio (B&W Photography, Landscape: 1st Place), (Best of Show Photography: Honorable mention)

My family is actively involved in county fairs showing draft ponies at many fairs in Central and Northern Ohio. I see myself as an amateur photographer with a pretty good eye for subjects and composition. I entered several of my favorite photos from the past year in my local county fair, the Knox County Fair. It seemed like the thing to do as a new resident of rural Ohio. Click on an image to read the story behind the photo.

“The Golden Hour”
Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio - I enjoy beautiful sunsets from my sunroom. A large field with a single tree makes for the perfect subject for a photo. This sunset was especially memorable for its golden colors. -
“Sunrise Cutting through the Fog”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - This foggy morning gave me a subject I seldom photograph in the mornings. These trees are opposite my driveway to the south. I took the photo looking east to capture the rising sun behind the fog. -
"Get me to the church on time"
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - This is a common view from my camera. The small country church makes the perfect subject for an early morning shot. -
“Summer at the Mill”
Clifton Mill, Clifton, Ohio - This mill is the subject of many calendar photos. I capture this shot on a summer bike ride through Greene County. The sky was perfect. -
Waiting on Mom at the Market”
Owl Creek Produce Auction, Fredericktown, Ohio - I frequent this farmer's auction outside of Fredericktown, Ohio. The vendors are primarily Amish. Many Amish families visit the sale. I captured this shot of two Amish children patiently waiting with their mother during the sale. -
"Between a rock and a hard place"
Honey Run Highlands Park, Howard, Ohio - This park is visited primarily for the waterfall which is very picturesque. This autumn shot captured the colors of fall surrounding the ledges leading from the falls to the Kokosing River. -
“Put on a Happy Face”
Brown Family Environmental Center, Gambier, Ohio - I often cycle the Kokosing Gap Trail and stop at this perennial garden along the trail. Every season presents a show of natural beauty. The simplicity and patterns of a daisy caught my eye on this morning. -
“Sunset Treat Time”
Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio - Sometimes the sunset in the country is vivid, as it was this day. I was out feeding ponies treats as the sun set. What a spectacular capture of the ponies with quite a natural backdrop. -
“Let the Sun Shine In”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - The abandoned farm across the road from my house is intriguing. The buildings each tell a story. The light filtering through the corn crib made an interesting subject. -
“Sentinels along the Road”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - Looking east from my drive down the road is an interesting play on perspective with trees framing the country road. -
“The Ghosts of Grandma Gatewood”
Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio - A visit to Hocking Hills is always a photographic adventure. This morning the fog was lifting along the trail adding an element of mystery to the photo. -
“Watching the Clouds Pass By”
Upper Sandusky, Ohio - I was on my bike cycling the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) when I looked to my right to see this barn. I thought the barn was unique as were the clouds. Sometimes, a bike ride is more about nature than it is about miles.
