A collection of my favorite photos from 2020 that tell the story of my year. The global pandemic limited my travels. My bicycle tours included the Katy Tail in Missouri . Pennsylvania’s Great Allegheny Passage, and Maryland’s C&O Canal Trail. Many of these favorites are of our farm in rural Ohio Click on an image to read the story behind the photo.

Steel reaches for the sky
Early-January: A winter hike found me exploring the Ariel-Foundation Park in Mount Vernon. This park is on the site of a large PPG windshield glass factory. The repurposed land is highlighted with abstract steel sculptures reflecting the park's industrial heritage. -
Eerie winter frost
Early-February: This early February sunrise was reflected through a heavy frost giving an eerie scene with the Berger century barn as the centerpiece. -
Dog Fountain in Downtown Mount Vernon
Early-July: Mount Vernon Nazarene University built a small park with a unique dog fountain next to their downtown campus. I made this a destination for many 2020 rides. It's the perfect lunch spot. -
Hay and straw baling time
Early-July: Summer is a busy time on the farm. That's Brett's dad on the tractor bringing another load of straw into the hoop barn. It was pretty much my job to toss and unload the bales. It was always hot. It was good exercise. -
Queen Anne's lace in the pasture
Late-July: I often wake early and snap a sunrise shot from our back yard. This summer shot of the Berger century barn is framed by an abundant crop of Queen Anne's lace. -
Queen Anne's lace in a bright morning sun
Late-July: A bright sunny morning highlights Queen Anne's lace in the pony pasture. -
Downtown Columbus from a deer's perspective
Early August: A group of friends cycled into downtown and across the Scioto River. This is one of the nicest views of the downtown skyline reflecting in the river. -
Boathenge on the Katy Trail
Early-September: This unique trailside attraction was on the Katy Trail just east of Columbia, Missouri. It pays tribute to Stonehenge in England. -
Touring bike lean on the GAP
Mid-September: I took a break at one of my favorite GAP spots between Confluence nd the Pinkerton High Bridge. This represents what makes me happy. -
Shipshewana Amish harness shop
Late-September: We took a mini-vacation to Shipshewana in Indiana's Amish country. I caught this craftsman's leather working workbench in an Amish harness shop. -
October sunrise on the farm
Early-October: The sunrise is ever changing with the seasons. In mid-summer it is due east. By October, it has moved to the southeast. This was a particularly colorful autumn sunrise. -
The Dude at Union Station
Early-October: I began my annual GAP & C&O tour by taking Amtrak to Union Station in Washington D.C. I spent the following week cycling back to Pittsburgh. -
Eastern portal of the Paw Paw Tunnel
Early-October: This happens to be my favorite photo for 2020. This was taken at the eastern portal of the Paw Paw Tunnel on the C&O Canal Trail on my annual tour across the trail. -
Salisbury Viaduct on the Great Allegheny Passage
Mid-October: One of my favorite photo spots on my annual GAP tour. The Salisbury Viaduct spans a long valley with an expansive view. It reminds me of the first time I cycled the GAP. It is an impressive sight to behold. -
Casselman River at the Pinkerton Horn
Mid-October: The colors were in full Autumn mode as I cycled across the Pinkerton low bridge on the GAP. I always get off my bike and climb down to the river for a super view that does not disappoint. -
Alliance Rust Belt reality
Mid November: I returned to my hometown of Alliance, Ohio in mid-November. The reality of the Rust Belt hit home. These tracks pass through the city's largest employers. Today, the 1,000s of jobs are just a memory. -
December first snow on the farm
Mid-December: Snow is relatively rare and usually a light cover. The farm was greeted by a 6" snowfall just before Christmas. A stroll through the pony pasture was peaceful and beautiful.
