My family is actively involved in county fairs showing draft ponies at many fairs in Central and Northern Ohio. I see myself as an amateur photographer with a pretty good eye for subjects and composition. I entered several of my favorite photos from the past year in my local county fair, the Knox County Fair. It seemed like the thing to do as a new resident of rural Ohio. Click on an image to read the story behind the photo.

“The Golden Hour”
Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio - I enjoy beautiful sunsets from my sunroom. A large field with a single tree makes for the perfect subject for a photo. This sunset was especially memorable for its golden colors. -
“Sunrise Cutting through the Fog”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - This foggy morning gave me a subject I seldom photograph in the mornings. These trees are opposite my driveway to the south. I took the photo looking east to capture the rising sun behind the fog. -
"Get me to the church on time"
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - This is a common view from my camera. The small country church makes the perfect subject for an early morning shot. -
“Summer at the Mill”
Clifton Mill, Clifton, Ohio - This mill is the subject of many calendar photos. I capture this shot on a summer bike ride through Greene County. The sky was perfect. -
Waiting on Mom at the Market”
Owl Creek Produce Auction, Fredericktown, Ohio - I frequent this farmer's auction outside of Fredericktown, Ohio. The vendors are primarily Amish. Many Amish families visit the sale. I captured this shot of two Amish children patiently waiting with their mother during the sale. -
"Between a rock and a hard place"
Honey Run Highlands Park, Howard, Ohio - This park is visited primarily for the waterfall which is very picturesque. This autumn shot captured the colors of fall surrounding the ledges leading from the falls to the Kokosing River. -
“Put on a Happy Face”
Brown Family Environmental Center, Gambier, Ohio - I often cycle the Kokosing Gap Trail and stop at this perennial garden along the trail. Every season presents a show of natural beauty. The simplicity and patterns of a daisy caught my eye on this morning. -
“Sunset Treat Time”
Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio - Sometimes the sunset in the country is vivid, as it was this day. I was out feeding ponies treats as the sun set. What a spectacular capture of the ponies with quite a natural backdrop. -
“Let the Sun Shine In”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - The abandoned farm across the road from my house is intriguing. The buildings each tell a story. The light filtering through the corn crib made an interesting subject. -
“Sentinels along the Road”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - Looking east from my drive down the road is an interesting play on perspective with trees framing the country road. -
“The Ghosts of Grandma Gatewood”
Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio - A visit to Hocking Hills is always a photographic adventure. This morning the fog was lifting along the trail adding an element of mystery to the photo. -
“Watching the Clouds Pass By”
Upper Sandusky, Ohio - I was on my bike cycling the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) when I looked to my right to see this barn. I thought the barn was unique as were the clouds. Sometimes, a bike ride is more about nature than it is about miles.
