Tom’s summer 2018 bicycle tour of the Czech Republic. Tom cycled through Southern Bohemia after playing tourist in Prague. The beauty of Southern Bohemia was exposed in small villages and towns surrounded by lakes, hills, forests, and rolling farmland along the Vitava River. The final days of the tour followed cycle paths and country roads along the Danube through Austria’s Wachau Valley. Click on an image to read the story behind the photo.

I always enjoy walking through the arts and craft displays under the grandstands. I chose some of my favorite photos from the last year and enter them into the photography show. Barn Dance
A visit to Malabar Farms' Heritage Days is one of the highlights of my autumn traditions. The Central Ohio Draft Horse Association hauls guests from the lower farm to the manor house and upper farm. September 24, 2017, Malabar Farms, Lucas, Ohio (Color Photography, Barns: 1st Place) -
Morning Glory
The Berger family dairy farm is a frequent subject in my Instagram feed. It's position to the east of our house makes it the perfect subject for a sunrise photo. This particular morning I was fortunate to be there as the sun was breaking over the horizon with some nice cloud cover. It silhouetted the barn and silo making a dramatic shot. October 21, 2017, Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio (Color Photography, Sunrise/Sunset: 1st Place) -

September 24, 2017, Malabar Farms, Lucas, Ohio (Color Photography, Domestic Pets: 1st Place) -
Winter Chores
I was out for a walk around the pony pasture on a cold winter day when I came upon my father-in-law moving a bale of hay to the livestock feeder. It captures life on the farm that must go on regardless of the weather conditions. January 13, 2018, Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio (B&W Photography, Barns: 1st Place) -

Approaching St. Stephen's Basilica
This lovely avenue leads from the Danube to St. Stephens Basilica. It was my favorite street on the Pest side. -
St. Stephen Basilica
This basilica is named after St. Stephen, the first king of Hungary. It sits on a small square that hosted two festivals in the 4 days I was there. -
The dome at St. Stephen's Basilica
This basilica was extremely ornate and full of many religious artifacts. I regret that I did not know I could walk to the Basilica's tower. Next time. -
St. Stephen's Right Hand
I did not understand what this was during my tour. It sat at the end of the small chapel in the back of the basilica. His had was exhumed and placed in this jewel and gold encrusted display case. I understand it is very sacred to Hungarians. -
The Great Market Hall
This magnificent structure is the largest marketplace in Budapest. The building is full of vendors of all types. It sits on the Danube, a nice walk from the Chain Bridge. For an authentic experience, take the tram along the river for spectacular views. -
Inside the Great Market Hall
You will find fruit, vegetable, meat, souvenir and many other vendors in this marketplace. There is a whole aisle dedicated to Hungarian paprika, honey, jams, and lavender. -
View from the Great Market Hall Upper Floor
If you are visiting Budapest, head up to the second floor of the Great Market Hall. You will find the best deals on souvenirs, Hungarian lace, embroidery, leather and woodcrafts. It is also the home of food booths and a cafeteria. The langos stand is perpetually busy. -
Buda Castle Funicular
Hop on this funicular on the Buda side of the Chain Bridge to head up the Buda Castle District. I enjoyed it both during the day and at night. The night view is spectacular. Walk at least one of the ways up or down the hill. The stairs along the funicular pass through nicely landscaped gardens and crosses the funicular twice. -
The Danube at from my hotel
I ended my Budapest days sitting in the park in front of my hotel on the Danube. The city glows at night. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is the centerpiece of the city. -
Buda Castle at Night
I took a Danube evening cruise that was spectacular! This is one of the must-dos when visiting Budapest. The Hungarians enjoy putting on a light show on their buildings. -
Hungarian Parliament Aglow
Wow! This building glows from all points on the river. Such a beautiful place. I regret that I did not have enough time to tour the insides. -
Buda Side of Budapest at Night
Looking across from the Parliament are the spires of the churches in the Buda Castle District. -
Buda Castle and Chain bridge
The castle is aglow at night. My hotel was at the foot of the castle. It was the perfect home. It was close to busy Pest but also a short walk to the quiet Buda neighborhoods. -
Beauty of the Chain Bridge
I walked this bridge several times a day. It is crowded with tourists during the day. I loved my walk across it after dark. It's construction unified the cities of Buda and Pest into one city, Budapest. -
Matthias Church at Night
It's well worth a visit one evening to the Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church. -
Matthias Church in the Buda Castle District
This church square is a lovely place to walk during the evening. The immediate neighborhoods are tourist oriented. WAlk a few blocks away and be treated to the real Budapest. -
The Buda Castle
This castle is quite impressive on the outside. It turns out that the inside is institutional rooms. The castle was almost leveled in WWII. The Russians left it unrestored for almost 10 years as a sign of distaste for the monarchy. It was reconstructed Soviet style with not decorations in the interior. What a shame to lose that grandeur. -
Fisherman's Bastion
My favorite view of Fisherman's Bastion. This happened to be on my favorite evening walk thru the Buda Castle District.
My family is actively involved in county fairs showing draft ponies at many fairs in Central and Northern Ohio. I see myself as an amateur photographer with a pretty good eye for subjects and composition. I entered several of my favorite photos from the past year in my local county fair, the Knox County Fair. It seemed like the thing to do as a new resident of rural Ohio. Click on an image to read the story behind the photo.

“The Golden Hour”
Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio - I enjoy beautiful sunsets from my sunroom. A large field with a single tree makes for the perfect subject for a photo. This sunset was especially memorable for its golden colors. -
“Sunrise Cutting through the Fog”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - This foggy morning gave me a subject I seldom photograph in the mornings. These trees are opposite my driveway to the south. I took the photo looking east to capture the rising sun behind the fog. -
"Get me to the church on time"
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - This is a common view from my camera. The small country church makes the perfect subject for an early morning shot. -
“Summer at the Mill”
Clifton Mill, Clifton, Ohio - This mill is the subject of many calendar photos. I capture this shot on a summer bike ride through Greene County. The sky was perfect. -
Waiting on Mom at the Market”
Owl Creek Produce Auction, Fredericktown, Ohio - I frequent this farmer's auction outside of Fredericktown, Ohio. The vendors are primarily Amish. Many Amish families visit the sale. I captured this shot of two Amish children patiently waiting with their mother during the sale. -
"Between a rock and a hard place"
Honey Run Highlands Park, Howard, Ohio - This park is visited primarily for the waterfall which is very picturesque. This autumn shot captured the colors of fall surrounding the ledges leading from the falls to the Kokosing River. -
“Put on a Happy Face”
Brown Family Environmental Center, Gambier, Ohio - I often cycle the Kokosing Gap Trail and stop at this perennial garden along the trail. Every season presents a show of natural beauty. The simplicity and patterns of a daisy caught my eye on this morning. -
“Sunset Treat Time”
Dog and Pony Show Farm, Knox County, Ohio - Sometimes the sunset in the country is vivid, as it was this day. I was out feeding ponies treats as the sun set. What a spectacular capture of the ponies with quite a natural backdrop. -
“Let the Sun Shine In”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - The abandoned farm across the road from my house is intriguing. The buildings each tell a story. The light filtering through the corn crib made an interesting subject. -
“Sentinels along the Road”
Miller Township, Knox County, Ohio - Looking east from my drive down the road is an interesting play on perspective with trees framing the country road. -
“The Ghosts of Grandma Gatewood”
Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio - A visit to Hocking Hills is always a photographic adventure. This morning the fog was lifting along the trail adding an element of mystery to the photo. -
“Watching the Clouds Pass By”
Upper Sandusky, Ohio - I was on my bike cycling the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) when I looked to my right to see this barn. I thought the barn was unique as were the clouds. Sometimes, a bike ride is more about nature than it is about miles.
