such a restful vacation week

eCT-OldLyme 021My vacation week comes to an end tonight. Brett and I had a wonderful sunny and hot week in New England. We spent the week with our pal Rich at his beach house in Old Lyme, Connecticut and two nights in Provincetown. The weather was perfect with no rain. The heat could have been turned down some but did not prevent us from having a great time. We did a good bit of cycling during the week. In the coming week, I’ll write some posts about the trails and roads we rode during the week. It was a perfect vacation. Here are my favorite memories from the week.

eCT-Moosup 013 Independence Day: Our disappointing ride on the Moosup Trail that resulted in our trip to the Mohegan Sun Casino. We had a great lobster dinner, won some money and had a great time. We finished this day on the beach watching Rich’s neighbors celebrate the 4th with fireworks. It was a fun filled day.

eRI-EastBay 049 East Bay Bike Trail: This Rhode Island trail was recently rated one of the top 10 trails in the USA. It was a hot day and fun 32 mile ride! We rode through several small towns outside of Providence along Narragansett Bay. Well maintained with nice scenery; it is a must-do for avid cyclists.

eRI-BlockIsland 074 Block Island: This resort island just north of Long Island was an hour ferry ride off of New London. What a fun day again! Record heat of 96 with a heat index of 109 shortened our planned ride to 8 miles. The Southeast Lighthouse and Mohegan Bluffs made this ride worth the effort. The local brewpub restaurant was a welcome sight during the hot post-ride afternoon.

eMA-Ptown 011 P’town: What more can you say about this phenomenal destination on the tip of Cape Cod. This long time LGBT resort town is so diverse. Galleries, shopping, many dining and entertainment venues, and lovely bed and breakfasts make this Portuguese fishing village a favorite for anyone visiting the Cape.

eMA-Provincelands 114 Provincelands: Wow! Wow! Wow! The bicycle trail through the dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore is by far the best trail I have ever ridden. It was a magnificent 16 mile ride. If you cycle, you must add this to your to-do list. You will not be disappointed.

eRI-BlockIsland 005 Evenings in the backyard: It seemed like all of our fun packed days ended with cocktails and conversation in Rich’s backyard. The cool breezes off Long Island Sound made these warm evenings so much more enjoyable. Well… there was that one night when a skunk paid us a visit!

eRI-BlockIsland 154 It’s back to work tomorrow morning. This ranks as one of my favorite vacations. The memories of the week will be with me for a long time. Thanks to Rich for putting up with Brett and me during the week. He was the perfect host and tour guide.
