a new ride for this year

DSCF4095 The unrelenting winter weather is finally letting up in Northeast Ohio. It’s been in the 40s and sunny for 4 straight days and the forecast only gets better this coming week. Snow is slowly and steadily receding. We can actually see some grass and most of our shrubs.

For the past 2 months I’ve been researching and shopping for a new bike. Last year I began cycling on a regular basis. My 15 year only Sears mountain bike has served me well. but it was time to retire it. In addition to visiting these local bike shops, I took several bike maintenance classes. I knew I needed to learn the basics of tire repair and brake and gear adjustment. It was also a good way to learn more about the bike shops and their staff.

I ended up buying a Kona Dew Plus from Blimp City Bikes on Merriman Road in the valley. I had narrowed the search to a Fuji Absolute 2 or the Dew Plus. Both bikes are fitness hybrids. The Fuji tended to be a little more road bike-like. The Kona more mountain bike like. The geometries were almost identical. It came down to the final latest rides. Although the Fuji was definitely faster, I felt the Dew Plus was more in line with my current needs.

I have come to realize over the past few months that the bike shop and employees need to factor a lot into the selection. Andy, the owner of Blimp City, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. It’s a new bike shop, located conveniently to my week night rides. I think will grow in the coming years. Being a local owner also factored into my decision. Brett also decided to buy the Dew Plus. We now have matching bikes.

Today I took the bike out for a short 3 mile spin around the neighborhood to get a feel for the bike. It so outperforms my prior bike. I found myself averaging about 3 miles faster than my previous normal pace. It took hills so effortlessly. I had seen this on the test ride yesterday. It only performed better at home. I think it was an excellent choice for me. I hope to be out riding some this week.  Next week for sure once the time change gives me more light after work.
