Yesterday was a long day. The plenary session ended at 9:30 p.m. Pr. Don King and I walked back to the Hyatt. We then went to the Goodsoil wine and cheese reception and evening worship service. It was standing room only!
This morning I can tell you more about the pastors coming out. A press conference was held at 7:00 a.m. where 82 Lutheran pastors came out. Many are in relationships. Some have already been removed from the roster; some remain on the roster. This is really an act of courage for them.
Goodsoil produced a devotions book that is super nice, a very glossy piece. It is being handed out to members and guests as they enter the breakfast hall or load onto the buses. It is titled “A Place within my Walls”. In the back it lists brief biographies of the pastors coming out. Some are featured. Many will be surprised to see Barbara Lundblad and her partner profiled. The book brings the struggle and issue to the forefront.
I have seen many people reading it and carrying it. I am anxious to hear the reaction in the general session hall. I can’t tell you more, but it is only the beginning of more good news to come. I almost forgot Emily Eastwood, LC/NA Executive was a guest on NPR Morning Edition. Download the podcast if you missed it. She is of course speaking of full inclusion and the pastors.
PS: The photo is Navy Pier at 7:30 a.m. Quite a bit less people out there!
